BERKELEY, CA - The California Climate Action Registry announced the recipients of its second annual Climate Action Champion Awards on Tuesday at the Registry's conference entitled GHG Registries & Competing in a Carbon-Constrained World. The awards were presented to two organizations and one individual, all being recognized for demonstrating exemplary leadership in addressing climate change in California. The awards went to:

CLIF BAR Inc. - Based in Berkeley, California, CLIF BAR is a leading maker of all-natural energy and nutrition foods. CLIF BAR earns its Climate Action Champion Award for fully integrating sustainability and climate neutrality into all aspects of its operations while also working to influence and educate other businesses and the public about climate change issues. To become climate neutral, CLIF BAR has partnered with Native Energy to help build the first large-scale Native American-owned wind farm in the U.S. and to offset the carbon dioxide generated by business operations. Starting in 2004, CLIF BAR partnered with the UNDO IT campaign of Environmental Defense to raise public awareness about global warming. CLIF BAR is also a member of the EPA Green Power Partnership Leadership Circle and was named the EPA Green Power Partner of the Year for 2004.

Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) - SMUD, the nation's sixth largest publicly-owned electric utility, is recognized for its leadership on climate change issues and its innovative energy programs that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, SMUD matches 40 percent of Greenergy premiums with investments in new sources of renewable power generation. The current commitment to new resources totals more than $6.9 million. To demonstrate its commitment to alternative energy, SMUD is striving to achieve a 20% RPS by 2011, one of the most ambitious goals among the large municipal utilities in California. SMUD was one of the first public electric utility to join the California Climate Action Registry as a Charter Member, and was also the first company to certify its greenhouse gas emissions inventory with the Registry in May 2004.

David Olsen - Dave Olsen, the former President and CEO of Patagonia, Inc. is recognized for his continued leadership on climate issues, including his role in the creation of the California Climate Action Registry. As a board member of the CEO Coalition to Advance Sustainable Technology, he brought the concept of a voluntary greenhouse gas registry to California Senator Byron Sher and led the development and passage of the legislation creating the Registry. Mr. Olsen has led the development of solar, wind, hydro and geothermal power projects in more than 20 countries, as President of Clipper Windpower Development Company, President/CEO of Northern Power Systems, President of Peak Power Corp., Vice President of Magma Power Company, and director of International Utility Structures, Inc.
