TITLE: INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - How the New Economy can spur Growth, Development and Responsible Competitiveness in West Bengal.

DATE: Saturday 24 July, 2004
LOCATION: Taj Bengal, Kolkata, India.
ORGANISER: Centre for Social Markets (CSM)

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE:
The Information & Communication Technology (ICT) sector - and in particular Business Process Outsourcing - are being heralded as the best hopes of skills-rich but capital-poor economies such as India. What is the truth in this based on the experience of a regionally and economically diverse country such as India? What potential does investment in ICT hold for states that wish to leapfrog to a more advanced state of development? How can the industry and government work together to create the right framework conditions? And how can the ICT sector contribute to the development of a culture of responsible competitiveness that respects people and the environment?

This Conference, held in association with the Dept of Information Technology, Government of West Bengal, will examine these questions in the light of emerging experience from leading Indian states and the lessons they hold for the growth of the ICT sector in West Bengal.
