STAMFORD, CT. - October 16, 2007 - Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the nation's largest nonprofit community improvement organization, has chosen UPS as its 2007 Vision for America Award honoree. Keep America Beautiful recognizes and honors UPS for the corporation's leadership in environmental issues, and for its outstanding efforts to promote and sustain volunteerism in America.

The Vision for America Award is presented annually to distinguished leaders of honored corporations, whose personal and corporate commitment have significantly enhanced civic, environmental and social stewardship throughout the United States. UPS Chairman and CEO Michael L. Eskew will accept the 22nd annual Vision for America Award on behalf of UPS and its employees on November 20 at a dinner at New York City's Grand Hyatt.

"UPS' commitment to volunteerism and community service, whether among its employees or engendered in the many communities it serves throughout the U.S., is unparalleled," said Keep America Beautiful President G. Raymond Empson. "KAB is proud to present this year's Vision for America Award to one of the nation's pre-eminent corporate citizens."

"UPS and Keep America Beautiful share the mission of engaging individuals to protect the environment and beautify their neighborhoods. We appreciate their recognition of our work," said Eskew.

Celebrating 100 years of service, UPS has grown to become the world’s largest package delivery company, a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services, and is one of the most recognized and admired brands in the world.

Keep America Beautiful commends UPS for the corporation's belief that working "green" and working smart are synonymous, and that the combination can meaningfully touch people, the planet and profitability. The company’s environmental responsibility ranges from facility construction and operation, to aircraft and vehicle maintenance, to the conservation of resources. Every driver uses the familiar hand-held Delivery Information Acquisition Devices (DIAD), reducing paper waste and saving thousands of trees annually.

Another factor in KAB's selection of UPS was the company's commitment to volunteerism, and its direct support of KAB's recent Volunteer Management program. Responding to a growing need to retain high-quality volunteers, KAB executive directors and volunteer leaders across the country were trained using course guides, Webinars and workshops funded by the UPS Foundation. Volunteerism is also a critical part of the UPS culture. The company's Neighbor to Neighbor employee volunteer program alone logs over 900,000 volunteer hours each year and UPS, its employees and retirees, have been the top contributor to United Way for seven years.

Other recent UPS accomplishments in the realm of its economic, social and environmental objectives include:

  • Contributing nearly 1 million volunteer hours through employee involvement in community projects around the globe;

  • Maintaining the largest alternative-fuel fleet in the industry and shaving more than 28.5 million miles by using technology to streamline delivery routes;

  • Recycling more than 2.7 million pounds of electronic equipment from its operations.

  • Being named among "The Worlds Most Respected Companies" in 2007 by The Reputation Institute;

  • Being listed as one of "The World's Most Ethical Companies" in 2007 by Ethisphere magazine; and

  • Achieving top-ranked status among airlines by CERES for striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

    Keep America Beautiful salutes UPS for taking its role as significant corporate citizen seriously through its ongoing commitment to philanthropy, environmental stewardship and employee volunteerism as well as support of broader volunteer efforts across the spectrum of corporate and nonprofit America.
