April 12, 2007 - Keep America Beautiful has developed a new initiative to help communities kick-start or intensify their local graffiti prevention activities.

The 2007 Graffiti Hurts® Grant Program allows communities to apply for a grant of $2,000, offered in two categories "“ community over 300,000 and community under 300,000 population. The Graffiti Hurts® Grant Program will operate on alternate years with the Graffiti Hurts® National Awards program, which recognizes and rewards innovative, successful prevention efforts.

"The goal of Graffiti Hurts has always been to engage individuals and communities in developing sustainable anti-graffiti efforts," said G. Raymond Empson, president of Keep America Beautiful, Inc. "This new grant program will help communities begin a graffiti prevention effort where one may never have existed before. We are pleased to be able to offer this opportunity, and we are grateful to The Sherwin-Williams Company for their continuing support of Graffiti Hurts."

Graffiti Hurts® was developed in 1996 through a partnership between Keep America Beautiful and The Sherwin-Williams Company (NYSE: SHW), maker of Krylon paint, to respond to the blight of graffiti vandalism in communities nationwide. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, graffiti contributes to lost revenue associated with reduced ridership on transit systems, reduced retail sales, and declines in property value.

Proposed projects for funding can address graffiti prevention and education, eradication, or enforcement of local anti-graffiti laws. Funds must be used for projects that will be initiated in Fall 2007 and completed no later than December 31, 2008.

Local governments, police departments, youth groups, downtown associations, crime prevention organizations, and other groups dedicated to eradicating graffiti vandalism are encouraged to apply. Grant awards will be announced by August 1, 2007.
