Symposium Speakers

Bennett Freeman is Managing Director for Corporate Responsibility in Burson-Marsteller U.S. Corporate and Financial Practice. A former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, he has two decades of combined government and private sector experience on sensitive domestic and global issues faced by multinational corporations. Mr. Freeman was formerly the Principal of Sustainable Investment Strategies, where he advised global companies, international institutions and NGOs on corporate social responsibility and political risk issues. Previously in the State Department, Mr. Freeman served in 1997 and 1998 as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Public Affairs and chief speechwriter for Secretary Warren Christopher. Prior to government service, he worked from 1985 to early 1993 as Manager-Corporate Affairs for General Electric. He earned an A.B. in History at the University of California at Berkeley, and an M.A. in Modern History at Oxford University.

Andrew McCormick is Vice President, Media Relations at Pfizer Inc., a research-based health care located in New York. Mr. McCormick joined Pfizer in 1993. Previously he worked in marketing communications for IBM and as a newspaper reporter for the Wilmington News Journal in Delaware and the Newport News Daily Press in Virginia. A graduate of Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, Mr. McCormick served as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in Ghana, West Africa from 1982-1984.

Debbie Slappey is Senior Communication Consultant in the Atlanta office of Mercer Human Resource Consulting. She helps clients formulate and implement workforce communication programs that support overall business objectives. In the past five years, she has specialized in helping clients transform their communication strategies to embrace the power of the web - from media strategy to messaging to content architecture and management. Before joining Mercer, Ms. Slappey was the communications practice leader for another benefits consulting firm in the New York area. She also has extensive experience in corporate non-profit communication. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a BA in Journalism/Public Relations.
