Washington, D.C. – The World Bank in collaboration with the Global Alliance for Workers and Communities and CSR Wire is pleased to invite you to participate in an online discussion on the subject of “Media and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)” to be held on the Internet from March 29 to April 16, 2004.

The aim of this online event is to bring together the perspectives and experiences of specialized reporters, mainstream journalists, editors, policy-makers, global brands representatives, factory owners, media owners, media analysts and academics from around the world on the subject of media and corporate social responsibility in the global economy.

This three-week electronic discussion will be organized around 3 themes:

1) What is the role of the media in Corporate Social Responsibility?
2) Promoting transparency & access to credible sources of information
3) Barriers to covering Corporate Social Responsibility in the mainstream media

Each of the above topics will be introduced and moderated by experts from leading newspapers, CSR practitioners, academic institutions, and/or international development professionals.

The sponsoring organizations of this online discussion believe that the media is critical in furthering the debate on corporate social responsibility, a field that spans from corporate governance and accountability to labor conditions in supply chains, monitoring and verification, socially responsible investments and shareholder activism. Many different stakeholders have strong opinions about the role of the media on this topic, yet the voices of journalists and editors themselves are rarely heard. Whether you participate in this event from a computer in Washington, D.C., London or Johannesburg or you are sitting in a cyber cafe in Bangkok, Guangzhou or Port Louis, Mauritius your views matter to us.
