NEW YORK, NY - The Institute for Sustainable Communication (ISC) has concluded a successful pilot of the Responsible Enterprise Print (REP) program for securities firm Piper Jaffray & Co.

The REP pilot program identified opportunities for Piper Jaffray to reduce the cost and environmental impact of its enterprise-wide, print-related business activities and purchasing decisions. Conducted at Piper Jaffray headquarters in Minneapolis, the REP pilot program culminated in a presentation of findings and a report of recommendations, which were based on a comprehensive set of analyses.

Developed and implemented by the ISC, with support from the Environmental Careers Organization and Green Seal, the REP program analyzed the performance of the internal printing facility and centralized copying operation of Piper Jaffray, and evaluated the company's purchasing practices for commercial printing, office paper and printing supplies. In addition, the pilot program analyzed the environmental impact of a wide variety of internal and external communications - including marketing materials and transaction printing. Lastly, the team conducted a detailed assessment of the firm's fleet of office document production devices.

To conduct these analyses and quantify its findings, ISC developed an Environmental Footprint of Print (EFP™) model, which calculates the energy requirements, greenhouse gas, airborne emissions, wastewater effluents, solid wastes and natural resource consumption directly associated with enterprise print. The ISC also adapted the EFP model to create an easy-to-use Design for Environment (DfE) tool for Piper Jaffray.

REP Analyst Ravi Karumanchiri, explains, "The DFE tool instantly calculates the relative environmental impacts of two design options. It helps people understand the effects of their decisions, by demonstrating the value of making a responsible choice."

Based on the REP team's systematic and sustainable approach to effectively managing enterprise-wide printing, publishing and packaging, enterprises can expect to achieve several operating improvements, including stronger economic performance, enriched knowledge management and information handling capabilities, significant environmental footprint reductions, and the deepening of mutually beneficial ties with preferred print-related suppliers.

"The knowledge gained from the REP Pilot program at Piper Jaffray also helps bolster the ISC's commitment to helping identify, train and support a new generation of communication professionals," says Oya Demirli, Executive Director of the ISC. "REP educational materials and courseware for colleges will help develop specialists in triple-bottom-line best practices. These individuals will be of great value to Fortune 100

companies and other large organizations seeking to meaningfully and measurably improve Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) performance. With this effort, the ISC helps create a body of knowledge regarding best practices, as well as a community of practice and professional development network.
