WASHINGTON, DC - SUPERVALU Inc. (NYSE: SVU) is pursuing operational excellence as a partner in the EPA's ENERGY STAR program. The company rated 193 of its corporate owned supermarkets and grocery stores with the EPA's energy performance rating scale. The results show an average corporate performance in the top 21 percent of all supermarket companies. To recognize these top performing stores, SUPERVALU will achieve more than 100 ENERGY STAR Labels to display at the stores. In 2004, this outstanding performance resulted in the reduction of approximately 339 million kBtu in energy. This equates to real savings of more than 54,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, which is equivalent to taking 11,827 passenger cars off of the road for one year, or providing 7,014 American households their electricity use for one year. SUPERVALU anticipates that future energy performance improvements will reduce electrical energy usage by an additional 418 million kBtu per year for its retail stores.

Cadence, an ENERGY STAR Partner, provides SUPERVALU with expense management software and services that track operating costs at 873 sites. Real time utility expense information tracks project results and reveals opportunities to enhance performance. Cadence also hosts the ENERGY STAR performance rating system and provides this rating as a service to SUPERVALU.
