DETROIT - Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network are funding five programs to reduce teen dating violence in six Michigan counties. The Educating and Empowering to Stop the Hurt programs will take place during the 2004-2005 school year and will reach more than 20,000 middle and high school students in Cass, Kalamazoo, Livingston, Macomb, St. Joseph and Wayne counties.

According to a study by Harvard University's School of Public Health, one in five adolescent girls will be physically or sexually abused in a dating relationship. And 22 percent of high school students are victims of nonsexual dating violence, according to estimates from the U.S. centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The five funded programs aim to reduce risk by increasing students' awareness of dating violence, sexual harassment, anger management, peer pressure, appropriate interventions and effective communication. The five recipients are:

  • LACASA (Livingston Area Council Against Spouse Abuse) in Howell will receive $20,000 for its Youth Preventative Education Program, which will reach more than 5,000 middle and high school students throughout Livingston County with classroom presentations and Creating Safe Relationships educational groups.

  • Domestic Assault Shelter Coalition in Three Rivers will receive $19,910 for its Healthy Relationships Program, which will reach at least 1,000 middle and high school students in St. Joseph and Cass counties through videos, group work, discussion, role-playing, stories and lectures during health classes.

  • Children's Hospital of Michigan's school-based health clinic at Redford High School in northwest Detroit's Brightmoor District will receive $18,300 for its S.A.F.E. program, which will reach at least 3,200 middle and high school students with a series of interactive presentations focusing on different aspects of abuse.

  • Turning Point in Mt. Clemens will receive $10,000 for its Prevention Education Program for Community Youth, which will reach at least 4,000 middle and high school students with classroom presentations that include discussion, role-playing and confidential Q&As.

  • YWCA in Kalamazoo will receive $10,000 for its YWCA Sexual Assault Program, which will reach nearly 7,000 middle and high school students through community education literature and presentations on sexual assault, personal safety, violence prevention and other gender and relationship issues.

According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, the medical and mental health costs of intimate partner violence exceed $4.1 billion a year nationwide.

"The Michigan Blues are working to reach Michigan's young people to help break the cycle of violence in this generation," said Diana Jones, vice president of Community Affairs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. "It's an enormous problem that devastates young lives and raises health care costs. As the state's largest health benefits provider we feel an obligation to help stop the cycle of violence that can begin at a very young age and become a lifelong tragedy."

The Educating and Empowering to Stop the Hurt funding is part of the Michigan Blues' Social Mission Health Initiatives, which aim to improve the health status of Michigan residents by focusing on four key community health issues: Access to Health Care, Depression Awareness and Treatment, Domestic Violence and Abuse Prevention, and Physical Activity and Nutrition.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, a nonprofit corporation, provides health care benefits to nearly 4.8 million members through a variety of plans: Traditional, Blue Preferred and Community Blue PPOs, Blue Choice Point of Service, and the Blue Care Network HMO. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network are nonprofit corporations and independent licensees of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
