Building Sustainable Communities "“ ICMM's June Newsletter

June 26, 2007- ICMM has released the latest issue of its newsletter, Good Practice. In this issue, we examine progress since ICMM came into being in 2001 and we attempt to take an honest and robust look at some of the challenges ahead.

In his leading article, ICMM’s Chairman Leigh Clifford points out that the world is a different place six years on and that there are big new challenges for the industry and for ICMM. In a now bullish sector he argues that we must still strive to improve practice across the industry as a whole and continue to work with partners and with opinion formers to strengthen our industry's reputation for responsible mining and for sustainable development.

Elsewhere, Anglo American's Edward Bickham introduces the findings of a recent ICMM stakeholder survey which indicates that in areas such as the industry’s environmental and social performance there is a strong belief that ICMM is making an important contribution to performance improvement. We also look at our work in the areas of environmental stewardship and indigenous peoples issues.

ICMM provides a platform for industry and other key stakeholders to share challenges and develop solutions based on sound science and the principles of sustainable development. Its vision is for a respected mining and metals industry that is widely recognized as essential for society and as a key contributor to sustainable development.

ICMM's mission is two-fold - to distinguish its members as industry leaders and to make a contribution to raising standards across the industry as a whole.

To be an ICMM member, a company must build trust and respect with key stakeholders as a result of good performance in sustainable development, including clear and comprehensive approaches to reporting and assurance.
