SAN FRANCISCO - Organic pioneer Gerald Prolman sees San Francisco through rose-colored lenses. This spring, he hopes mayors from the world's largest cities will too.

When San Francisco hosts the United Nations World Environment Day this coming June, a team of eco-experts will be working with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's office to coordinate the weeklong series of events showcasing environmental solutions for urban communities around the globe. The event, which coincides with the United Nations' 60th anniversary, will welcome UN Secretary Kofi Annan and international dignitaries including mayors from 100 of the world's largest cities.

Prolman, whose company Organic Bouquet (www.OrganicBouquet.com) was named official florist, is planning an organic floral extravaganza culminating with "Flower Power Day" - featuring an international symposium on ecological flower growing and a grand "organic flower parade" in downtown San Francisco.

"World Environment Day brings environmental issues to the forefront and promotes positive change in nations around the world," said Jared Blumenfeld, director of San Francisco's Department of the Environment. "Organic Bouquet fits right into the spirit of this unprecedented event."

This year's theme, "Green Cities: Where the Future Lives," coincides with a historic shift in global demographics when, for the first time ever, more than 50 percent of the world's population will live in cities. Open to the public, the five-day series of green events will feature urban environmental solutions such as recycling, renewable energy, resource conservation, environmental justice and public health. There will also be related events and festivities including special museum exhibits, clean-up campaigns, and movie screenings.

This will be the first time since the World Environment Day's creation in 1972 that it will be held in North America. In 2004, the event - hosted in Barcelona, Spain - drew tens of thousands of participants, international dignitaries and journalists.

United Nations World Environment Day is one of the most important events on the international environmental calendar. It is celebrated around the world on June 5, and each year the United Nations selects a major city to host the main celebrations.

Prolman, who is driven by a passion for the environment, intends to demonstrate to the world that organic flower production can radically benefit the environment and the global ecology.

"We're delighted that organic flowers will be a focal point for World Environment Day," he said at a recent gathering of friends and colleagues. "This is a great start, and we'll keep at it until all flowers are green."
