WASHINGTON - BoardSource, the premier source for nonprofit governance information, today released The Nonprofit Legal Landscape, a book focusing on the key legal topics that affect nonprofit governance. The book, written by lawyers at the law firm of Ober|Kaler, offers nonprofit board members and managers a reference tool on important laws and legal concepts to guide them in the decision-making process.

"In today's environment, it is critical for nonprofit leaders to understand the legal issues facing their organizations," said Deborah S. Hechinger, president and CEO of BoardSource. "The Nonprofit Legal Landscape offers board members important legal information and guidance."

The book is the result of a collaborative effort by the lawyers who comprise the nonprofits practice group at the law firm of Ober|Kaler. The Nonprofit Legal Landscape focuses on the core principles of law that apply to nonprofit organizations, making each principle more accessible and easier to understand.

One of the guidebook's primary authors, Thomas K. Hyatt, is a principal of the Ober|Kaler firm. He co-chairs Ober|Kaler's nonprofits practice group, frequently lectures on business and tax-planning issues for nonprofits and has written numerous articles on tax-exempt organization topics.

"Directors and executives of nonprofits are ultimately responsible for the actions - good and bad - of their organizations," said Hyatt. "Having a basic awareness and understanding of the unique legal issues facing nonprofits can help these leaders to better respond when issues arise, or perhaps to avoid them all together."

The Nonprofit Legal Landscape is one of three BoardSource publications focusing on essential information for nonprofit leaders - Understanding Nonprofit Financial Statements and Fearless Fundraising also provide practical information on two other critical issues for board members and executives. The three books are available for purchase at www.boardsource.org or by calling 800-883-6262.
