Media Advisory - Congressional Briefing: Addressing the Problems of Low-Wage Workers

Submitted by Corporate Voices for Working Families

WHAT:      Corporate Voices for Working Families will host an event for Congressional staff to discuss the important issues affecting low-wage workers in America. This briefing will be sponsored by Representative Rosa L. DeLauro (D-Connecticut). Topics of discussion will be: conditions and concerns of low-wage workers; and solutions that could improve the lives of low-wage workers, while increasing productivity and morale.

WHY:       To increase awareness of the increasing problems facing low-wage workers and their struggling families.
Between 2002 and 2012, the Labor Department expects the economy to create more than 7.5 million new jobs; however, almost six million of those new jobs will be low-wage jobs with poor pay and little or no access to basic benefits. An increasing number domestic programs for low-wage workers are likely to be cut, potentially making it more difficult for low-wage workers to survive in today's society.

WHO:       Donna Klein, President and CEO of Corporate Voices for Working Families, will discuss the current problems low-wage workers face and some potential policy remedies; Guy Molyneaux, Peter D. Hart Research Associates and Vince Bregelio, Wirthlin Worldwide will present on "Struggling to Make Ends Meet: Low-Wage Work in America"; and Brandon Roberts, Director of Working Poor Families Project, will discuss "Working Hard, Falling Short: A Report on America's Working Families."

WHEN:      Friday, March 4, 2005 from 10:00AM - 12:00PM

WHERE:    Rayburn House Office Building, Room 2105, Capitol Hill

MEDIA NOTE: All hearing participants are available to discuss these issues and how improving conditions of low-wage workers can make a difference. Please call for more information or to arrange a conversation.
