The lack of public sector transparency is a major barrier to development in many countries today. Beginning April 11 and over the next three months, the quarterly Development Gateway Special Report will explore the practical issues of ensuring openness in government, as well as how transparency is being promoted and monitored around the world.

A Cross-Sectoral Collection of Views, Trends, Resources: The Special Report format brings together a variety of viewpoints through in-depth interviews, as well as collections of reports, case studies, statistics and survey results from the Development Gateway and other websites. Experts in governance, civil society, and the private sector, representing 13 countries, will shed light on key questions, such as:

  • To what extent are e-government solutions a justified expense and an effective measure for achieving transparency?
  • How best can developing nations achieve public sector transparency? What role does an open media play in ensuring government transparency?
  • Does civil society involvement always lead to better outcomes?

Interviews of the following people, among others, will be featured:

  • Rhoda Kadalie, Executive Director, Impumelelo Innovations Award Trust and former Commissioner on South Africa's Human Rights Commission
  • Wijayananda Jayaweera, a native of Sri Lanka and Director of UNESCO's Programme for the Development of Communication
  • Eduardo Bohórquez, Director of Transparencia Mexicana, Mexico's chapter of Transparency International
  • Thomas Riley, Co-founder and Executive Director of Canada's Commonwealth Centre for Electronic Governance
