KUTZTOWN, PA - The United Nations has granted The Rodale Institute, pioneers in organic and sustainable agriculture, special status to consult with the UN Economic and Social Council.

The decision, announced at the Council's February meeting at UN Headquarters in New York, invites the Institute to participate in key policy meetings in New York, Geneva and Vienna on topics as wide-ranging as sustainable agriculture, the status of women, social and community development, and indigenous issues.

"Rodale's expertise in organic agriculture goes back to the very birth of the movement," said Anthony Rodale, Chairman of the Institute, speaking from the organization's experimental farm in Kutztown, PA. "We are honored that the UN has recognized this, and asked us to contribute to shaping global food and agriculture policy."

The Institute's leadership role dates back to World War II, when J.I. Rodale, the grandfather of the current chairman, introduced the concept of organic agriculture to the United States. Since then, the Institute's research, training and educational programs have inspired an organic movement that is now the fastest growing sector of the U.S. food economy.

The Institute's programs now reach from Japan and Russia, to Senegal and their Newfarm.org Internet community. In 2003, Anthony Rodale called for the establishment of 100,000 certified organic farms in the United States by the year 2013.

"We believe that the world is hungry for sustainable solutions, and we are proud to join the ranks of the world's most influential leaders in helping create those answers," said Rodale.
