Charter Communications honors producer/host Lee Godden for new show. Godden interviews executives who positively influence what he calls "excellent companies." Topics discussed include business ethics and socially responsible investing (SRI).

'Good Business,' a weekly 30-minute television program that debuted seven months ago on Charter TV, was named Best New Television Program at the annual LB Awards, held on March 11, 2005 in Long Beach, California.

"I'm thankful to Charter Communications and to the half-million people who live in the City of Long Beach for supporting this show," said producer and host Lee Godden. "It's an honor for me to interview executives who understand that businesses have a dual responsibility of profitability plus ethical, socially-responsible behavior."

A recent guest on 'Good Business' was Russ Hill, CEO of the investment firm Halbert Hargrove, who discussed the elements of socially responsible investing, or SRI. Hill said that over the long term, well-managed companies that practice corporate social responsibility often perform financially better than those that don't have a formal CSR policy.

Godden said, "I define an excellent company as one that consistently rewards investors and stockholders with profitable performance, and also pays genuine attention to five key areas:
1. The environment, including pollution reduction, recycling and energy-saving measures.
2. Community relations, including philanthropy, foundations, community service, outreach and scholarships.
3. Employee relations, including fair wages, paid benefits, family-oriented policies and parental leave.
4. Diversity, including utilization of minorities, women, the disabled and veterans.
5. Customer relations, including quality management and customer satisfaction programs.

Godden is the author of the book ZenWise Selling (Telsius, 2004). After a 20-year career as a sales executive with several Fortune 500 corporations, including Compaq, Godden now speaks to business groups on the topic of ethical profitability. Godden has written for the Los Angeles Times, and his regular "Advice for the Sales Professional" column appears in the Long Beach Business Journal. He also serves as West Coast correspondent for the PBS television series 'Ethical Marketplace.'

"The Enron, Tyco and Worldcom scandals have obviously increased the public's awareness about ethical business practices," Godden said. "The success of shows like 'Good Business' and 'Ethical Marketplace' reflects the growing interest in merging capitalism with social responsibility."

'Good Business' airs Wednesdays at 3:30pm on Charter Cable's Long Beach Community Television. DVDs of past episodes are available to educators, the media and meeting planners. Lee Godden can be reached at (562) 986-5163 or through his www.LeeGodden.com website.
