SILVER SPRING, MD "“ January 25, 2007 - Carbonfund.org today announced its newest partner, flowerpetal.com, the leading online flower retailer. flowerpetal.com has taken an industry-leading position by offsetting not only its own operations, but also all shipping involved in delivering flowers to its customers.

flowerpetal.com has worked hard to reduce the impacts of its operations by doing things like encouraging its employees to utilize public transit, but it struggled to account for the emissions that were produced by shipping flowers to florists. Flowers are frequently shipped by plane for distribution in the United States. According to the Society of American Florists upwards of 85% and as high as 98% of the most common fresh cut flowers, roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, etc., are imported, mostly from South America. Additionally, the flowers are delivered by truck or van from the florist to the customers’ home or office.

Carbonfund.org used its Carbonfreeâ„¢ Shipping application, which was developed jointly with Carnegie Mellon University’s Green Design Institute, to calculate the impact of the shipment and delivery of flowers and then helped flowerpetal.com offset the resulting CO2.

"Unlike many other products, flowers spend most of their existence helping the environment, however, that doesn't mean we can ignore that so much of our product has to be flown in daily from South America," stated Brian Crummy, president of flowerpetal.com. "We're taking a good thing and trying to make it better."

"We applaud flowerpetal.com for their leadership on climate change," said Eric Carlson, Carbonfund.org’s executive director. "Not only is flowerpetal.com taking responsibility for the carbon footprint associated with its own operations, it is also making a significant outreach effort to its customers to engage them on climate change and demonstrate how easy taking action can be."

"After discussing offsetting our carbon emissions with different businesses and organizations, Carbonfund.org was our natural choice. Carbonfund.org is a non-profit organization, cost-effective and was willing to assist flowerpetal.com in evaluating the entirety of our footprint. It was a complicated process that Carbonfund.org made simple," Crummy continued.

Flowerpetal.com and Carbonfund.org will continue to expand this relationship over time. "We’re always looking to do more, and we encourage any other business to consider going Carbonfreeâ„¢ as well," said Crummy.
