Silver Spring, MD - The U.S. Green Building Council's (USGBC) Chicago Chapter is made up of members whose cutting edge work is making the Chicago region more sustainable. Now, the chapter itself has taken a leadership role by offsetting all of its CO2 emissions from its offices and travel with Carbonfund.org. And, more importantly, the Chicago Chapter will be reaching out to its 350 plus members and their networks to let them know about the important role that carbon offsets play in the fight against climate change.

USGBC is committed to sustainable building, and as part of that commitment, the organization is focused on reducing energy use from buildings. By reducing energy use, the climate change impact of the building is also reduced. Carbonfund.org encourages organizations to "Reduce What You Can, Offset What You Can't"™, and the Chicago Chapter's commitment reflects that principle.

The Chicago Chapter will be presenting their work as a chapter to fellow USGBC chapters from across the country at the Greenbuild conference in Denver, Colorado from November 15-17, 2006. As part of this presentation, chapter members will present their offset commitment to other chapters and encourage them to also offset their own emissions. This outreach effort will introduce carbon offsets to a wide variety of sustainability leaders.

"USGBC is the world's premier green building organization, and its Chicago chapter is leading the way toward a more sustainable future for Chicago," said Eric Carlson, executive director of Carbonfund.org. "We are pleased to work with such a forward-thinking group of people to not only offset their chapter's emissions, but to take their education and outreach efforts to a new level."

"Carbonfund.org made it easy and affordable for us to offset our CO2 emissions and gave us a new way to help our members reduce their climate change impacts," said Lois Vitt Sale, Chair of USGBC's Chicago Chapter. "Carbon offsets further our goals as an organization and we're proud to be Carbonfree™!"
