San Francisco- The Goldman Environmental Prize, the world's largest award for grassroots environmentalists, is offsetting their annual ceremony with Carbonfund.org. Held on the 24th of April at the San Francisco Opera House, the Goldman Environmental Foundation will offset the event on behalf of their guests and the award winners and highlight the need for taking account of carbon emissions and global warming.

"The Goldman Environmental Prize is meant to draw attention to the global nature of environmental issues and award those who work on a grassroots level to make a difference," says Lorrae Rominger, deputy director of the Goldman Environmental Foundation. "Making our event carbon neutral is a logical extension of what the Goldman Prize seeks to accomplish."

This year's event will award each winner $125,000. After the event in San Francisco, the winners will travel to Washington DC for another awards ceremony at the National Geographic Society and meetings with political, policy and environmental leaders at events on Capitol Hill and at the Brookings Institute . With the award winners coming from all over the world, the Goldman Foundation has ensured that their extensive travel will also be carbon neutral via Carbonfund.org.

"To work with such a signature organization and event is very exciting for Carbonfund.org," says Eric Carlson president of Carbonfund.org. "The Goldman Environmental Prize is very representative of both the environmental problems and the inspirations people have to stop them, and we are glad to be considered a part of the solution."

Carbonfund.org is a non-profit organization whose goal is to make carbon offsets and climate protection easy, affordable and a normal way of life for every individual and business. Carbon offsets - also called renewable energy certificates and 'green tags' - enable individuals and businesses to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in one location, where it is cost effective, to offset the emissions they are responsible for in their normal activities, like home, office, driving or air travel emissions. For instance, a clean, zero CO2 wind farm can offset the carbon dioxide produced by a coal-fired power plant that powers a home.

The average American is directly responsible for about 10 tons of carbon dioxide annually through their home, car and air travel, and their average total annual impact rises to an average of 24 tons when factoring in the purchase of goods and services. Conferences, with the heavy reliance on air travel and other transportation, are an easy first step for any organization to offset. Because conferences also often bring decision makers together, for Carbonfund.org, it is an excellent opportunity to educate and demonstrate that being responsible is both simple and environmentally effective.
