Washington, DC - February 16, 2006 marks the one year anniversary of the Kyoto Protocol. This global agreement to enforce the reduction of greenhouse gases to 7% below 1990 levels has been adopted by over 150 countries worldwide. Climate change is no longer a hypothetical argument. It is occurring and humans are responsible for it, according to every past and current chief of the Environmental Protection Agency. It is now everyone's responsibility to act to reduce the threat of climate change.

Carbonfund.org, a nonprofit organization that supports renewables, efficiency, and reforestation to stop the threat of climate change, has initiated the "Climate Challenge" The Climate Challenge empowers every person and business to reduce their climate impact to zero simply by a) calculating their climate impact--which can be done easily on the carbonfund.org website, and b) supporting climate-friendly projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions by making a tax-deductible donation to Carbonfund.org. Already, leading environmental organizations such as the National Wildlife Federation, and socially responsible businesses like Working Assets, have made their commitments as the Climate Challenge grows in scope.

Starting on February 16, participating organizations will inform millions of people--by email, press release, newsletter and advertisements--of the challenge. The challenge is open to environmental, health and other nonprofit organizations and businesses that share an interest in reducing the effects of climate change.

When the US opted to not sign the Kyoto Protocol, mainly due to the negative "economic impact" the Bush Administration said it would have on our country, many Americans were left wondering how they could do their own part to reduce emissions. Carbonfund.org and the Climate Challenge offer people that opportunity.

"People told us they wanted an easy and affordable way to reduce their impact on the environment at the same time many politicians were saying it could not be done. Carbonfund continues to show that for less than $100 per year, or $8.25 per month, individuals can effectively reduce their impact on climate change to zero," Lesley Marcus Carlson, president of Carbonfund.org said. "When you add in the other benefits of being tax deductible and supporting jobs and investment in rural communities, Carbonfund and climate protection becomes a great opportunity for individuals and businesses to do their part."
