WASHINGTON, DC - Carbonfund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the threat of climate change, and Ceres, a national network of investment funds, environmental organizations and other public interest groups working to advance environmental stewardship on the part of businesses, have launched a joint carbon offset program.

Under the program, participants in the Ceres network will be encouraged to offset their personal and corporate carbon footprint by making a donation to Carbonfund. Carbonfund then supports a variety of carbon reducing projects, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and sequestration that remove the equivalent carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By doing offsets in bulk Carbonfund can more efficiently reduce a person's climate impact. Ceres will also receive a portion of all donations made under this agreement.

"For years, we have extracted a cost on our environment that has never appeared on company financial statements. The concept is simple. We are all responsible for carbon emissions, the cause of climate change, when we use energy to heat and light our homes, drive to work, fly cross country or buy food, clothes and other goods. While there are things we can do to reduce this impact, including using efficient light bulbs, insulation and more fuel efficient cars, we still use energy everyday and that is creating a greater threat to our planet.
Carbonfund allows individuals and companies to easily calculate their carbon emissions for home, business, commuting and air travel and then donate to offset the impact they have on the environment and climate change. The Ceres Offset Program takes this idea a step further by also encouraging companies that already own carbon to donate it to Carbonfund for permanent retirement to showcase their corporate environmental commitment and receive a tax deduction for the donation.
