Carbonfund Offers Lowest Cost Climate Change Solution

Washington, DC - Carbonfund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the threat of climate change, is winning kudos from Slate Magazine, Grist Magazine and others for its low cost approach to solving the problem of climate change. Hailed as the easiest and most affordable path to climate neutrality, Carbonfund aims to create a revolution by getting millions of ordinary people to reduce their climate impact simply by supporting climate-friendly projects.

"For just $99 a year, just $8.25 a month, the average person can reduce their entire impact on the environment, by offsetting about 18 tons of CO2. If anyone tells you there are no solutions to climate change, don't believe them," says Carbonfund President Lesley Marcus Carlson.

The concept is simple. We all are responsible for carbon emissions, the cause of climate change, when we use energy to heat and light our homes, drive to work, fly cross country or buy food, clothes and other goods. While there are things we can do to reduce this impact, including using efficient light bulbs, insulation and more fuel efficient cars, we still use energy everyday and that is creating a greater threat to our planet.

Carbonfund has come along to enable people to easily calculate their carbon emissions for home, business, commuting and air travel and then donate to offset the impact they have on the environment and climate change.

Carbonfund then supports a variety of carbon reducing projects, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and sequestration that remove the equivalent carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. By serving as a bulk offsetter Carbonfund can more efficiently reduce a person's climate impact.

"Our goal is to make carbon offsets easy, affordable and popular for individuals and businesses to reduce the threat of climate change. We are proud to offer the lowest cost climate change solution and are pleased people are beginning to take notice" says Carlson.

Carbonfund has recently been featured in Slate Magazine and was shown to offer the most climate change mitigation for the lowest price. In fact, Carbonfund costs roughly one-half the amount others charge for the exact same climate protection.

"We charge $5.50 per ton of offset, that's it," says Carlson. "The threat of climate change is simply too important to our generation and our children's to put profits before climate change protection," she adds. "Too many people are trying to make a quick buck when the future of our climate is at stake."

Carbonfund has been featured throughout the week of September 5 in Grist Magazine's Interactivist column and can be read at: http://www.grist.org/comments/interactivist/2005/09/05/carlson/

All donations to Carbonfund are tax deductible, for both individuals and businesses. Supporters receive a certificate for their donation.

Transportation
Whether you own a hybrid or a Hummer, now anyone can reduce the climate impact of their vehicle. For just $27.50 you can offset the climate impact of the average car. A complete gas guzzler can go carbon neutral for about $40, less than $3.50 per month.

"Carbonfund allows people to offset at almost any level," says Carlson. "They can offset a car, home, plane trip, wedding, conference, or office. Carbonfund is incredibly flexible," she adds.

Partnerships with Nonprofits
Carbonfund is also developing partnerships with larger, member-driven nonprofit organizations to spread the word about carbon offsets and serve as joint fundraisers for both organizations. "Carbonfund offers a free, turnkey carbon offset program to nonprofits, allowing them to provide an important service to their members without the start-up, research and administrative costs, and they receive a portion of the proceeds of each donation," says Carlson. Nonprofits simply mention Carbonfund and the partnership in their newsletters and on their website and direct members to the Carbonfund site.

Donating Carbon
Companies that already own carbon can donate it to Carbonfund for permanent retirement to showcase their corporate environmental commitment and receive a tax deduction for the donation. "Donating carbon offers companies the final piece of value on the carbon chain and ensures the carbon is permanently retired," says Carlson.
Carbonfund is a 501(c)(3) charitable, nonprofit organization.
