DENVER, CO - Coleman Natural Foods, the largest natural meat company in the United States, announces today that it will commit to the planting of 300,000 tree seedlings to aid the reforestation effort at Colorado's Hayman Burn Area. The announcement is an element of Coleman's unprecedented decade-long conservation program, "The Coleman Eco-Project 2015," announced on Arbor Day (April 29) to address the critical need to restore America's forests and protect U.S. working farms and ranches.

The Eco-Project 2015 was launched last week in Washington, DC with Coleman's commitment to plant 1 million trees and a challenge to companies and individual citizens to help plant 9 million more trees. As a primary partner, the U.S. Forest Service will match each tree planted by Coleman, its retailers and customers for a total of 20 million trees. Serving as a catalyst, Coleman is forming a creative working partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and two conservation non-profit organizations: American Forests (AF) and American Farmland Trust (AFT).

The Coleman Eco-Project 2015 will plant trees in every state throughout the country with special immediate emphasis on 15 projects in 8 states (Alabama, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Montana, Texas and Wyoming). In addition, education and training programs to protect 100 million acres of working farms and ranches also will be undertaken.
Mel Coleman, Jr., Chairman, Coleman Natural Foods, whose vision inspired the initiative is challenging America to join him and the Coleman partners, the U.S. Forest Service, American Forests and American Farmland Trust by contributing to the "Mel Coleman, Jr., 20 Million Tree Challenge," a key component of The Coleman Eco-Project 2015.

Joining Coleman executives today on the grounds at the Colorado State Capital Building in the ceremonial planting of the second of 20 million trees: Ralph Grossi, President, American Farmland Trust; Mel Coleman, Jr., Chairman, Coleman Natural Foods; Congressman Mark Udall, United States House of Representatives; Rick Cables, Region 2, Regional Forester, United States Forest Service; Bill Wilcox, Acting State Forester, State of Colorado; Jeff Olson, Vice President Development, American Forest; and representatives from the offices of Senators Salazar and Allard.

"The Coleman challenge is being undertaken on behalf of today's generation of Americans and for many more generations to follow, said Mel Coleman, Jr. "We've undertaken our land-based eco-system programs for the sole purpose of to improving and preserving our environment."

"The Coleman family and company have always been dedicated to preserving the environment. We sincerely hope others in Colorado and throughout the country will join us to reach our 20 million tree planting goal," Coleman added.

This year natural/organic and conventional grocery retailers Wild Oats Markets, Dorothy Lane Markets, Knowlan's, the Mid-Atlantic and North Atlantic regions of Whole Foods Markets and select A&P stores will display a tear pad with a UPC code that will permit customers to make a one-dollar contribution at each store checkout to The Coleman Eco-Project 2015. A tree will be planted for each dollar contribution made to the challenge and matched by the U.S. Forest Service. A Coleman product purchase is not required and Coleman contributions to the project are not contingent on sales. Other retailers from coast-to-coast are also planning to participate in the program.

"American Farmland Trust applauds and fully endorses this as an extremely sound and well -founded campaign," Ralph Grossi, President, American Farmland Trust, said. "We believe that the partnership with the United States Forest Service, American Forests and the American Farmland Trust will dramatically increase public response by creating a powerful synergy that emanates from planting trees and producing healthy, natural and environmentally -sound foods," he added.

"Coleman's announcement to work with its retail partners over the next decade to help reforest America represents both dedicated leadership and commitment to protect the environment," Jeff Olson, Vice President Development, American Forest said. "We are proud to be working with Mel Coleman, Jr. and his partners to achieve the 20 million tree goal," he said.

Coleman was raised on the fifth-generation Coleman Ranches in Saguache, Colorado where his father, Mel Coleman, Sr. started the Coleman Natural Meat business in 1979. The Coleman family translated their passion for sound range management and cattle production without the use of unnecessary chemicals and drugs into the "natural" brand of meat whose time has come with increasingly conscientious consumers.

The U.S. Forest Service will plant the trees with the resources provided by American Forests. Funds can be contributed to The Coleman Eco-Project 2015 at: www.americanforests.org or by a link from www.colemannatural.com.
