ATLANTA - Ochsner Clinic Foundation received the MedAssets 2005 Outstanding Humanitarian Award for supplying aid to Baptist Hospital when Hurricane Ivan ripped through the Gulf Coast crippling operations at the Pensacola, Fla., facility.

The award was presented during MedAssets Annual Meeting in Las Vegas to recognize Ochsner for its diligent efforts in gathering and transporting supplies and generators to Baptist Hospital where the staff was working without water, electricity or an outbound phone system.

A phone call to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola was one of many Warner Thomas, president and COO at Ochsner Clinic Foundation, and his management team placed that evening to hospitals along the hurricane's path. Relief efforts for Baptist Hospital began immediately with Ochsner employees and vendor Owens & Minor locating supplies and arranging transportation of the items by tractor-trailer to Pensacola. Baptist Hospital was operating on generators the next day.

"As healthcare providers, we're apt at handling crisis situations and working together to save lives," said Thomas. "We luckily escaped the destruction and knew if we found ourselves in a similar situation we would want people to reach out to help us."

"We admire Ochsner Clinic Foundation's determination and resourcefulness in providing aid to a fellow healthcare provider," said John Bardis, chairman, president, CEO of MedAssets. "Locating the scarce supplies and maneuvering through treacherous conditions, exemplifies the exceptional effort and commitment the Outstanding Humanitarian Award was created to recognize."
