SAN PEDRO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2006--The Port of Los Angeles has won the District 9 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2006 Pacific Southwest Region Environmental Achievement Award. The award recognizes the Port of Los Angeles for a variety of environmental initiatives, including Vessel Speed Reduction, Yard Tractor Modernization, Gateway Cities Truck Fleet Modernization, Locomotive Fleet Modernization, and Clean Marinas programs.

This award comes two weeks after the Port was awarded the 2005 Clean Air Excellence Award from the EPA in Washington, D.C. The Port won the award for its Alternative Maritime Power (AMP) program, which significantly cuts air emissions by turning off diesel-burning container ship engines while at dock and plugging them into clean electrical power instead.

"To receive this recognition from our local district EPA office is very gratifying," said Geraldine Knatz, the Port's executive director.
