WASHINGTON, DC. - May 12, 2009 - Despite the economic downturn, Federal employees in the Washington, DC area stepped up and pledged more than $62.7 million to people in need through the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area (CFCNCA) in 2008, making it the largest campaign in the history of the CFC program. The total contributions represent a $1.9 million increase, up more than 3 percent, over the 2007 pledge total.

In recognition of this remarkable achievement, America's Charities presented the Vanguard Award last week to the Local Federal Coordinating Committee (LFCC) Chair Linda J. Washington, Assistant Secretary for Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation. This first-time special award was created to honor the leading campaign in the area that has broken its record for the sixth consecutive year.

In accepting the award, Ms. Washington thanked the nearly 150,000 civilian, military and postal employees who donated money to about 3,900 local, national and international charities-making the CFCNCA the largest workplace giving program in the world. In fact, more than 42 percent of Federal employees gave to their favorite charities through the 2008 campaign, an increase of more than 2,100 donors over 2007.

"We are very grateful that Federal employees have once again come through with record pledges to offer hope for people and charities that rely upon them for critical assistance," said Ms. Washington. "We know these funds can make a real difference in people's lives, especially in light of the serious current economic conditions."

Moreover, the CFCNCA-managed by Global Impact since 2003-was the top-grossing campaign among approximately 240 individual CFC campaigns held nationwide during 2008. Since Global Impact assumed management of the CFCNCA, donations have grown over six consecutive years by 33 percent, from $47 million in 2002 to $62.7 million in 2008.

The CFC is the only authorized workplace giving drive of employees in the Federal workplace for charitable organizations. The purpose of the CFC is to support and promote philanthropy through a program that is employee-focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all Federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all. CFCNCA is the local campaign for Federal employees in the Washington Metropolitan Area.
