ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 5, 2007--The Qwest
Foundation has announced a $1,500 grant to the Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families, to provide educational information about domestic and dating violence to youth in local middle and high schools, the foundation announced today.

Esperanza Shelter is the only shelter in Santa Fe that provides a continuum of services for people experiencing domestic violence. Programs include a 24-hour crisis hotline and crisis intervention service, emergency shelter and housing, counseling for victims and more.

"Domestic violence is on the rise around the nation and here at home in New Mexico, and it tears at the fabric of a family," said Loretta Armenta, Qwest president for New Mexico. "Qwest Foundation wants to help break the cycle of domestic violence by showing alternatives, and Esperanza Shelter does that. If we can prevent just one incident of domestic violence, then this is money very well spent."

"Esperanza responds to an increasing need in this community - the need for safety in our homes," said K.C. Quirk, Esperanza Shelter for Battered Families executive director. "However, as more people learn about the support services Esperanza provides, the requests for help increase. Although Esperanza relies on funding from government agencies and foundations to cover much of our operating expenses, the ability to meet increasing community needs depends on community partners such as the Qwest Foundation. I appreciate the Qwest Foundation for helping like this."

Esperanza provides education to the public in an effort to raise awareness about domestic violence in our community. Educational presentations address the dynamics and effects of domestic violence and youth dating violence. Information about safety planning and how to access support services as well as how to affect positive change are core components of community education. Presentations are offered to schools, healthcare providers, service agencies, community organizations, law enforcement and the general public.
