NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 2005--Behind the Book, an innovative education program that seeks to bolster book reading and literacy skills among public school students in New York's economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, has been named the inaugural recipient of the Business Wire Literacy Initiative grant, Cathy Baron Tamraz, company president, announced today.

The $5,000 award will benefit Behind the Book's Elementary School Initiative (ELSI) program at P.S. 274 in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn.

The ELSI program includes a series of three workshops, featuring different authors/illustrators, who will work with second, third and fourth grade classes. Students will learn how to conceive and edit a story for a picture book, techniques for writing and illustrating the story, and the mechanics of assembling the text and illustrations into a book format. Each student will receive two copies of the respective author/illustrator's books as part of the workshop curriculum.

Students will be able to showcase their completed projects at a special event planned for next May.

Many award-winning authors and illustrators popular with urban youth are past participants in the programs. They include: Colin Bootman, Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, Diane McWhorter, Jaira Placide, Katha Pollitt, Ernesto Quinonez, Nelly Rosario, and Rita Williams-Garcia.

"Business Wire is proud to support the efforts of Behind the Book, an organization that is attempting to make a difference at the grass-roots level," noted Tamraz. "Business Wire as a company, through the philanthrophy of its founder, Lorry Lokey, has donated more than $110 million to worthwhile projects worldwide over the past decade.
The Business Wire Literacy Initiative grant is an attempt to give back to the community on a more local level in the markets in which we operate."
