America's Second Harvest Names the UPS Foundation 'Grantmaker of the Year'

CHICAGO, - America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network today announced that The UPS Foundation has been named "Grantmaker of the Year."

The UPS Foundation was honored for its outstanding support of America's Second Harvest food banks and food rescue organizations across the country. America's Second Harvest recognized The UPS Foundation for their gift to support the launch of a new, innovative food distribution system designed to improve the quantity and quality of food available to food banks around the country. America's Second Harvest is part of UPS's National Collaboration to Reduce Hunger and Improve nutrition initiative.

"The UPS Foundation provides tremendous support to our Network. They have a long standing commitment to help us feed millions of Americans who are hungry or at risk of hunger," said Robert Forney, President and CEO of America's Second Harvest. "Their contributions to us truly transformed our operations, allowing us to put more food and grocery product in the hands of those in need."

America's Second Harvest presented the award to UPS employees taking part in the UPS Global Volunteer Week activities at the Volunteers of America Family Emergency Shelter in Louisville, KY. During the UPS Global Volunteer week (Oct. 15-22), UPS employees donated their time and talents to help local communities around the world. In Louisville, UPS employees have packed over 48,000 pounds of food at the Dare to Care Food Bank, an America's Second Harvest Member.

America's Second Harvest also recognized The UPS Foundation for their past and present support for its disaster relief program. Most recently, The UPS Foundation was among the first to make a financial contribution to the organization's hurricane relief efforts. Two years ago, support from The UPS Foundation was instrumental in helping America's Second Harvest develop its disaster preparedness plans through funding regional training programs for food banks in areas prone to natural disasters. With support from donors like UPS, America's Second Harvest has dispatched nearly 1,500 semi-truckloads of food and grocery product to the Gulf Coast in response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"A major goal of ours is to increase the organizational capacities of charities like America's Second Harvest," said Evern Cooper Epps, president of The UPS Foundation and vice president of UPS corporate relations. "By funding this innovative technology project, along with disaster relief, we are doing just that. We are proud to join their mission of ending hunger in America and are honored to receive this award."
