MUNCIE, Ind., Dec. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In their first full year in the Muncie community, Sallie Mae Muncie employees along with The Sallie Mae Fund -- a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae -- have pledged nearly $80,000 to local charitable organizations and participated in several community-service programs to help local families during the holidays.

Muncie employees, along with a matching grant from The Sallie Mae Fund, contributed more than $60,000 to the Delaware County United Way in 2007 to improve the quality of life for the region's children and families. An additional $15,000 in 2007 grants from The Sallie Mae Fund supported the Muncie Family YMCA's Black Achievers Program, Unity Center and Motivate Our Minds, and scholarships for Camp Isanogel. Sallie Mae employees in Muncie also:

-- volunteered their time and efforts in support of the Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program, donating gifts to more than 50 needy children and families in Delaware County,

-- partnered with the Unity Center and Muncie Mission to collect more than 5,000 school supplies for area students

-- collected winter coats for needy children, and

-- supported the Little Red Door's holiday fundraising efforts with all proceeds going to Delaware County cancer patients.

Sallie Mae recently marked its first full year in Muncie. The company built out its facility in 2006, transforming it from a shell building to a state-of-the-art facility. Sallie Mae received the 2007 Community Impact Award from the Muncie-Delaware County Chamber of Commerce for its significant economic contributions and civic achievement in Muncie-Delaware County.
