CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 1, 2005--

Reconfirms Commitment to Helping Local Authorities Rebuild
Mississippi Community Devastated by Hurricane Katrina

Mittal Steel USA, America's largest steelmaker and a division of Mittal Steel Co., has delivered the damage assessments and repair recommendations for three city-owned buildings that sustained substantial damage as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

As part of the first phase of the company's effort, a team of engineers from Mittal Steel USA completed a comprehensive structural and architectural damage assessment of the area and the physical impact of high winds and flood waters on city structures. Working closely with the mayor of Long Beach, Billy Skellie, the team helped to assess the damage and develop a scope of repair for the Long Beach Public Library, City Hall and Police Station.

Once repair plans have been finalized, the team will work with Long Beach's city engineer to solicit project bids from local contractors and help the city to manage the rebuild effort. In addition, the company will provide project management expertise on-site to oversee and direct the company's contributions. Representatives of Mittal Steel USA will remain in Long Beach as long as the company can be of help to the local authorities who are the driving forces of the rebuilding effort.

As announced in October, Mittal Steel USA committed itself to a partnership with the city of Long Beach and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour to work with individuals, churches, local companies and organizations to rebuild the community.

"Long Beach has been blessed to have a friend in Mittal Steel USA," said Mayor Skellie. "We continue to appreciate the support and look forward to the many projects Mittal Steel has begun on Long Beach's behalf."

The company earmarked $1 million for the first phase to help get Long Beach to a point where it can begin reconstruction, and will contribute materials, people and capital for the long-term reconstruction project. All cash contributions are intended to help bridge the gap between the town's needs and other resources, and the company's in-kind services and resources will support those efforts. As in its steelmaking projects, Mittal Steel USA will be working to maximize the impact of every dollar spent.

"Mittal Steel prides itself on its spirit of innovation, and we see this as a model for corporate partnership -- addressing significant challenges through joint efforts between government and the private sector," said Lou Schorsch, chief executive officer of Mittal Steel USA. "In that spirit, we want to make a tangible, lasting difference in the community of Long Beach by being involved personally and directly throughout the rebuilding process."

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Mittal Steel USA also implemented a dollar-for-dollar matching program to support employee contributions toward direct relief. This initiative raised more than $500,000 for the work of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
