Tucson, AZ - Tohono Chul Park, Tucson's 49-acre center of nature, arts and culture, announced today its affiliation with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the national nonprofit that is the national leader in educating people about the beauty and necessity of native plants.

"Preserving plants native to the Sonoran Desert and educating others about their natural beauty and significance - all this is integral to the mission of Tohono Chul Park," said the Park's Executive Director Joan E. Donnelly. "The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a leader in protecting and restoring America's native landscapes, and Tohono Chul Park feels great synergy with this important organization."

As a Wildflower Center affiliate, Tohono Chul Park will continue to be a model for native plant conservation in the Sonoran Desert region, according to Donnelly. "We'll work with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center to determine how best to partner in our programs. And through the Park's gardens, trails and educational programs, we'll continue to inspire and educate visitors, helping them to live in harmony with the desert," continued Donnelly.

According to Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Director Susan K. Rieff, the missions of the two organizations are complementary and when combined will powerfully promote the use, conservation and restoration of native plants in the Sonoran Desert region. "This partnership will help us increase public awareness about the importance of native plants, their beauty and their role in community environments and economic well-being," said Rieff. "We are extremely enthusiastic about having Tohono Chul Park join our efforts."

According to Rieff, the intention of the Wildflower Center affiliate program is to:

  • increase public awareness about the importance of native plants;
  • promote the use, conservation, and restoration of native plants and natural communities
  • demonstrate the benefits of native plants and natural communities;
  • and generate public support for both organizations.
    The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center now has eight affiliates representing leading environmental organizations in key regions across the country and in England.
