Introducing Strathmore's New Windpower Series of High-Quality Artist Papers [Cohoes, NY] -- Nature has not only given inspiration to generations of artists, it has provided the raw materials to make high-quality artist paper. Now, Strathmore Artist Papers, a division of Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. is helping to return the favor with the launch of its new Windpower Series of artist papers.

Strathmore's latest series introduces three new product lines, all manufactured with 100 percent wind-generated electricity - a pollution free, renewable energy resource. Combined, the list adds eighteen new items to the company's selection of high-quality Sketch, Drawing and Bristol products. Like other Strathmore papers, new items in the Windpower selection are all acid-free. These papers are used not only by artists, but also by designers and art directors.

In 1972 Strathmore pioneered the practice of using recycled content to make high quality, fine art pads. That tradition continues today: Top-selling Strathmore products, such as the Premium Recycled Sketch and Drawing Pads are all made from 30 percent post-consumer recycled fiber.

The new Windpower Sketch and Drawing pads expand this list. But more significantly, by selecting a cleaner source of energy to manufacture its Windpower papers, the company has further reduced its impact on the environment without compromising the quality, functionality, appearance or price of the product.

The decision to produce the Windpower Series with renewable energy instead of fossil fuel, and recycled fiber instead of virgin fiber, results in the following environmental savings:

  • 13 million fewer pounds of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides emitted into the air we breathe
  • 8,581 fewer barrels of crude oil, or 1,960 tons of anthracite coal burned

The effect of this clean energy usage is the same as:

  • 14.5 million fewer automobile miles driven, or
  • 94,500 trees not cut down

Strathmore was acquired by Mohawk Fine Papers Inc. in May 2005. Mohawk is the only paper mill in the U.S. to use wind energy to manufacture paper. In 2004, Mohawk first began using the pollution-free alternative energy source for its Cohoes, New York, plant. Then, on June 1, 2005, following this year's acquisition of the Fine Papers business from International Paper, Mohawk negotiated a contract to purchase an additional 35 million kWh's of wind powered energy to its newly acquired Beckett Mill in Hamilton, Ohio, where the Strathmore, Beckett and Via papers are produced. This commitment to wind energy allowed Mohawk to join the highest level of EPA Green Power Partnership Leadership Club as well as earning a ranking (#16) in the EPA List of Top 25 U.S. Green Power Purchasers.

Mohawk's annual purchase of 45 million kWh's of wind energy offsets 21 percent of the electricity used at Mohawk Fine Papers' two New York mills and 50 percent of the electricity used at its Beckett Mill. Compared to conventional energy sources, wind farms pose a lower impact on wildlife and the ecosystem. Plus, their smaller footprint allows for multiple uses of the same land, and can provide alternative sources of income for family farmers and rural landowners.
