Allina Hospitals & Clinics Strengthens its Commitment to Philanthropy

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 2005--Allina Hospitals & Clinics is creating a new board-level Committee on Philanthropy and an Office of Philanthropy, substantially strengthening its commitment to providing exceptional health care to its patients and communities in the future.

"To continue to be a vital community asset, Allina must engage our communities with a coordinated focus on philanthropy," said Dick Pettingill, Allina president & CEO. "The fact is that our current health care system is not sustainable for future generations if we rely solely on government and private payers. To meet the future health care needs of our children and grandchildren we must harness the generosity of our communities."

The board's Committee on Philanthropy will be comprised of community leaders, including physicians, board members from Allina's local hospital foundations and current donors. Pettingill said that the Committee will be charged with translating Allina's strategic plan into an urgent and compelling case for philanthropic support that will complement and guide local fundraising. The Committee's chair will be announced in January. The board Committee and the Office of Philanthropy will focus exclusively on activities in support of development work at the local hospital and facility level; neither will be engaged in fundraising for Allina.

Sid Mallory, president, Abbott Northwestern Foundation, will lead the Office of Philanthropy as Allina's first executive vice president for philanthropy. The Office of Philanthropy will support the board's work and other philanthropy and development activities across Allina to achieve back office efficiencies and a coordinated approach.

Mallory has been president of Abbott Northwestern Foundation since 2002. Among his accomplishments in this role are: expanding the size of the Foundation board and volunteer base; dramatically increasing the number of new Foundation annual donors; raising $53 million to support the construction of a new heart hospital on the Abbott Northwestern campus; and implementing a new planned giving program, resulting in a $20 million planned gift in 2004. Prior to joining Allina, Mallory was vice president for development of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He has also served as director of external affairs for the Dallas Opera and chief executive officer of the Austin Museum of Art.

"Sid's leadership of the Abbott Northwestern Foundation has been exemplary," said Pettingill. "I look forward to working with him to take our philanthropic efforts to the next level."

Pettingill said that this effort will be a key strategic priority for Allina. When compared to like-sized, not-for-profit health care organizations across the country, Allina has a significant opportunity and potential to increase the level of philanthropic support, he explained. Allina is not yet setting a specific philanthropic target. Allina's hospitals, clinics and other specialty operations currently raise approximately $20 million annually.

"Minnesota has a rich history of investing in its community institutions to improve our quality of life," said Pettingill. "I have no doubt that we can harness the generosity of this community to support health care in new ways."
