Recipients of Food Lion's community service included the Children's Miracle Network (CMN), America's Second Harvest food banks, Easter Seals United Cerebral Palsy (UCP), the American Red Cross and numerous local charities.
The Food Lion Charitable Foundation provided grants in excess of $440,000 to more than 100 schools and other local non-profit organizations.
Food Lion stores raised more than $2.7 million for CMN and its network of children's hospitals. Easter Seals UCP received more than $1.5 million from Food Lion and its customers. Food Lion's annual "Shop & Care" campaign is recognized nationally as the largest food industry fundraiser for Easter Seals UCP.
America's Second Harvest and its affiliated food banks garnered more than $1.28 million in monetary and product donations from two Food Lion hunger campaigns. Total food/product donations (pounds and dollar value) given directly from individual Food Lion stores to local food banks in 2005 are being compiled by the company.
In addition, Food Lion stores, through a campaign to benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, raised and donated $589,543 to assist families impacted by the 2005 Gulf Coast and Florida hurricanes. At the beginning of the year, Food Lion stores raised and donated more than $140,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to help victims of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia.
The company's "Lion Shop and Share" program dispersed $700,000 to a wide variety of non-profit organizations in Food Lion's 11-state operations area. Individual Food Lion stores participated in a multitude of community service projects, including school supply drives, food drives and fund-raising efforts for families coping with financial hardships from medical bills and other disasters.
