Rebuilding Together Receives Grant From Safeco Insurance To Rehabilitate Homes And Conduct Training Workshops

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Rebuilding Together announced that Safeco Insurance has committed $75,000 to its mission. Rebuilding Together provides home rehabilitation services to low-income elderly, disabled and families with children, at no charge to the homeowner. Through this grant, 14 Rebuilding Together affiliates will work with Safeco employees to rehabilitate homes and will participate in capacity-building workshops.

There are 24 million low-income homeowners across America who are not able to afford the upkeep on their homes. Most of these families are forced to spend more than half their income on housing and must make critical decisions about how to spend the rest. Decisions include choosing between food and medications; heat or electricity. The choices rarely include the needed repairs to their homes such as fixing leaky roofs or running faucets, deteriorating pipes and crumbling paint, or installing devices such as grab bars, hand rails or tacking down loose carpeting.

Armed with this knowledge, Safeco and Rebuilding Together will:

  • Engage Safeco employee volunteers in delivering over $150,000 in market value services to 15 homeowners. (Rebuilding Togther quadrouples every dollar in house sponsorships by securing donated materials, supplies, skilled and unskilled labor.) Repairs will range from exterior painting and landscaping to new roof and plumbing installations;
  • Engage Rebuilding Together leaders in the 14 key locations in training workshops to address their specific management and operational needs.

Patricia Riley Johnson, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together commented, "It is private sector involvement and commitment, like that of Safeco Insurance that enable us to do our job -- rehabilitate homes owned by low-income elderly, disabled and families with children. We applaud Safeco Insurance for its civic commitment and generous support."

    The 14 locations are:
    Atlanta, Ga.
    Chicago, Ill.
    Dallas, Texas
    Denver, Colo.
    Indianapolis, Ind.
    New Britain, Conn.
    Nashville, Tenn.
    Portland, Ore.
    Orange County, Calif.
    Richmond, Va.
    Redmond, Wash.
    Seattle, Wash.
    Spokane, Wash.
    St. Louis, Mo.

"The first step to insuring a home against damage and loss is proper maintenance," said Wendy Stauff, Community Relations Manager for Safeco Insurance. "Rebuilding Together, whose mission is to help people stay in their homes through maintenance efforts, is a perfect partner for us."
