Xcaret, the most important eco-archaeological park in Mexico and Latin America, joined to the global celebration of Earth Day last April 22nd. The festivities were aimed to touch the hearts of visitors and employees so as to make them feel committed to this cause and provoke their action.

There were ecological and cultural tours with interactive activities embracing flora, fauna and Mexican culture. In the Tropical Jungle Trail, visitors planted ceibas, a sacred tree for the Maya and a very important native plant. On the fauna side, visitors could feed red macaws and visit their nursery; these birds are endangered and Xcaret has a permanent reproduction program that is very successful. In the Mexican culture workshop, tourists got the chance to taste a sample of Maya chewing gum, cacao seeds and understood the harmonious relation Maya had with Mother Earth thus, having a sustainable way of life.

The big closing was at the beginning of Xcaret México Espectacular, - a performance that takes place at night with a sample of the Mexican music and dance richness. Visitors were given an apple as a symbol of the food we obtain from the Earth and the audience was invited to have a minute of silence to thank the Planet for everything it gives to us. Tourists also received a book marker with five actions they could take, back home, in order to help prevent global warming.

Xcaret is a place committed with the environment. It was the first privately owned company that signed the Earth Charter Initiative in Latin America and has carried out environment educational programs for more than 100,000 kids in Quintana Roo for free. It is located in the Mexican Caribbean and receives more than one million visitors per year.

Iliana Rodriguez, PR manager for the park, explains "we are very pleased because each year, more and more peoople around the World celebrates Earth Day; that means a lot of people is planting consciousness at the same time. The didactic material prepared for this day was also published in local media and distributed to travel agencies with the idea of inviting people to take at least one action to prevent Global warming. Xcaret is a CSR believer, therefore, to have a positive impact in the community is just fare because the Earth is our home."
