BAR HARBOR, Maine--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 19, 2006--Over the past three years, billions of dollars have been poured into the development of bio-based energy fuels such as biodiesel from soybeans and ethanol from corn. This investment is causing people to look for a new generation of conversion technologies and feedstocks from plant and animal sources. Political considerations, including passage of the biodiesel tax credit, and high petroleum prices will continue to keep the spotlight on biofuels as a "hot" topic for investors.

With these factors in mind, "Soya Summit 2006: Food and Energy for the 21st Century" will present "Evaluating Biodiesel Investments: It's More Than Numbers", a workshop designed to put these trends into a broader perspective, equipping potential investors and other interested parties with tools needed to help them assess emerging opportunities. The session is one of four workshops covering various aspects of the soy industry, from energy to food and green marketing, on the conference agenda.

Soya Summit 2006 is a landmark event that brings together, for the first time, leaders from the food and energy industries to explore key issues and opportunities emerging in the changing global marketplace for food and biofuels. The conference takes place September 18-20 at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri and is co-sponsored by The Solae Company.

"One of the goals of Soya Summit 2006 is to help attendees understand the dynamic at play between the biofuel and food industries and its impact on the supply of commodities, price, and of course, farm producers. This conference looks at the ever changing landscape that impacts everyday decisions and will help one to better understand the future role that agriculture will play in both the food and energy markets," said Peter Golbitz, founder and president of Soyatech, which is presenting Soya Summit.

"Evaluating Biodiesel Investments: It's More Than Numbers" will be presented by Scott McDermott, partner, Ascendant Partners, Inc. This workshop will explore the process of evaluating business opportunities in the biodiesel field and inform attendees about how to accurately gauge the validity and sustainability of a presented business. Topics will examine ways to evaluate plans for biodiesel businesses; highlight strategies for companies to create value or take advantage of new business opportunities in this arena; and outline criteria for defining success.

"The biofuels industry is expanding at an extraordinary rate, attracting tremendous interest from the financial community as well as groups looking to build projects to accommodate demand. It's important that everyone involved understand how to assess the critical factors that drive successful investment," noted McDermott.

Other workshops on the Soya Summit agenda include:

  • Green Marketing 101: The Crash Course, presented by Jacqueline
Ottman, noted green marketing expert and author of the book,
Green Marketing: Opportunity for Innovation. Designed to be
highly interactive and informative, the half-day session will
include examples of successful programs and will also cover
Ottman's "Rules of Green Marketing" - insights into green
consumer demographics and market segments, and strategies
essential to green marketing success. Founder of J. Ottman
Consulting, Inc., Ms. Ottman has helped more than 60 Fortune
500 businesses, the ENERGY STAR(R) label and other
organizations learn how to seize opportunities by proactively
    addressing consumers' environmental concerns.

  • Incorporating Soy Proteins in New Food Formulations. Presented
at The Solae Company's Pilot Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri,
this workshop offers a special opportunity to learn about the
functional properties of various soy protein ingredients, and
also see how they are incorporated into a variety of food
prototypes including meat and dairy alternatives as well as
snacks and bars. The workshop will begin with discussion and
demonstrations followed by one-on-one meetings for
participants with The Solae Company's product application
specialists. Lunch and transportation will be provided.

  • Taste of Soy: Beyond Ingredients, Bring on the Food!
Participants will move beyond the basic vocabulary of flavor
descriptions that cover soybean and soy protein ingredients
(such as "grassy," "bitter" and "cereal") to sensory
evaluation of finished consumer products such as meat
alternatives, beverages, yogurt, energy bars and snack foods
made with soy. This informative and inspirational session will
be led by Barbara P. Klein, Ph.D., Professor Emerita of Food
Science and Human Nutrition and Co-Director of the Illinois
Center for Soy Foods at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, and Soo Yeun Lee, Ph.D., Assistant Professor
of Sensory Science in the Department of Food Science and Human
Nutrition, also at the University of Illinois.
