NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 2006--The number of women holding the top executive position in the Fortune 500 has doubled from five in August 2001 to ten in August 2006. That number will hit 11, when PepsiCo CFO Indra Nooyi takes over as CEO in October.

The study conducted by executive search firm Christian & Timbers also found that the more than half of current female CEOs in the Fortune 500 are found in the "pink collar" sectors of food or retail. In 2001 only one Fortune 500 female CEO was in retail. The findings will be presented at the Christian & Timbers' BEINCLUDED Global Inclusion conference in New York City on September 21-22. General Colin Powell is scheduled as keynote speaker.

The study conducted in August 2006 also found:

-- Of the one slated (Nooyi of PepsiCo) and ten current female
CEOs among the Fortune 500, six work in the pink collar
sectors producing or selling food and personal products

-- Of the six female CEOs in the pink collar sectors, three came
from operations; one is moving from CFO to CEO; two came up
through marketing

-- Only three of the 11 female CEOs in 2006 versus two of the
five in 2001 are in the IT /computer equipment sector

-- Of the ten female CEOs in the Fortune 501-1000, five are in
pink collar sectors.

"From PepsiCo to Avon to Sara Lee, women are driving big change at
some of the biggest companies in the country. Boards are beginning to
see that women CEOs can drive bottom-line results and protect the
reputation of billion dollar brands," notes Brendan Burnett Stohner,
leader of Christian & Timbers' diversity practice and a vice chairman
of the firm.

"The problem is that women are for the most part, still left out
of the corner office of major technology companies, financials and the
big industrials. We have a long way to go before we see real equity.
The talent is there. At Christian & Timbers our commitment is to get
the top women in the county in front of the right boards to move
diversity forward."
