SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2006--Aftermodern, a fine art gallery, announced it will host Asylum Access Foundation, the only U.S. nonprofit that offers legal aid directly to refugees in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. This will be Aftermodern's first "friendraiser," an event designed to spread awareness of the need to provide legal advocacy to refugees in their first countries of refuge in the third world. On Thursday, October 12, interested members of the public are invited to join Asylum Access volunteers, friends and donors at Aftermodern to hear special guest, Brigitte Kitenge, speak of her experiences as a survivor of the Rwandan genocide. Aftermodern will donate 5% of all art sales during the event on October 12th to support Asylum Access.

Jonathan Joseph, Executive Director of Aftermodern, said, "We are pleased to hold a 'friendraiser' for Asylum Access. This event gives San Franciscans an opportunity to learn more about how this organization's innovative, on-the-ground, legal services save lives and turn refugees like Brigitte Kitenge from victims to survivors."

When: Thursday, October 12, 6-9 pm

Where: Aftermodern Gallery, 445 Bryant Street (between 2nd and 3rd).

What: Wine, hors d'oeuvres, Aftermodern's Nostalgia exhibition featuring prominent Bay Area artists, and an opportunity for the public to learn more about Asylum Access's work to make refugee rights a reality in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

About Asylum Access

Asylum Access, based in San Francisco, is the only U.S. nonprofit that gives refugees the tools to assert their legal rights where they need it most -- in their first countries of refuge. Asylum Access was founded to make such legal advocacy available to the thousands of refugees, who would otherwise face detention, deportation, torture or death -- and to help these refugees to assert their rights to work, send their children to school, and begin to rebuild their lives in a new home.
