GLENDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 2007--Dr. Angel Cabrera, President of Thunderbird, the Garvin School of International Management, has been appointed Senior Adviser for the Global Compact on Academic Affairs.

Dr. Cabrera will lead the taskforce that will develop the Principles for Responsible Business Education to be presented at the Global Compact Leaders Summit in July 2007. His appointment will be for an initial period of 12 months.

He also will collaborate in designing the strategy and activity plan of the Academic Network, serve as an Ambassador to academic organizations on behalf of the Global Compact, and support the efforts of the initiative to promote its activities as they relate to management education in forums and media around the world.

The Principles for Responsible Business Education will become a framework for action for the academic community based on the Global Compact's ten principles. The new principles are intended to help academic institutions around the world function as a strategic partner in the advancement of good corporate citizenship worldwide.

Academic institutions from around the world, including the Academy of Management, the British Academy of Management, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the European Foundation for Management Development, and the European Academy of Business in Society, joined forces with the United Nations Global Compact in October 2006 to explore the drafting of some Principles for Responsible Business Education.

Dr. Cabrera will now work with the Global Compact Office to convene a drafting group consisting of approximately 50 representatives from key stakeholders, the deans of business schools from both the developed and the developing world, and recognized scholars. The Principles will be launched at the Global Compact Leaders Summit, to be held in Geneva on 5-6 July 2007.

Following the July Leaders Summit, a Global Council for Responsible Business Education will be created as the body in charge of linking academic activities and local operations of the Global Compact in every country where the initiative is present. The Council's goal will be to give new momentum to the development of learning capacities, stimulate new research, case studies, and provide technical support and added capacity to the Global Compact and responsible corporate citizenship worldwide.

"Dr. Cabrera is an outspoken advocate of corporate social responsibility, managerial professionalism and business ethics," said Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. "We are confident that he will bring invaluable insights and efforts to the Global Compact's academic affairs work".

"I can't think of a better organization than the United Nations to challenge us, management educators, to take an active role in the current global agenda, and to do so by doing what we do best, to educate future business leaders who are committed to running businesses as true global citizens," Cabrera said. "I'm honored by this opportunity to help the United Nations carry forward this great initiative."
