5.2 Million MWh of Green-e Certified Renewable Energy Sales in 2005

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, December 4, 2006-- The Center for Resource Solutions announced today the release of verification results for Green-e certified renewable electricity product sales in 2005. The report shows a 43 percent increase in total sales volume over the previous year, equivalent to 5.2 million MWh of renewable generation. Green-e certified renewable electricity products were sold in 48 out of 50 states in the United States, and 215,000 MWh was purchased by companies who contracted to use the Green-e logo to promote their commitment to certified renewable energy.

"Sales of renewable energy increase significantly each year, confirming that voluntary markets for renewable energy are strong and contribute to new generation and supply," said Jan Hamrin, president of the Center for Resource Solutions. "Our independent verification process is a vital confirmation to businesses, institutions and consumers who look to certified renewable energy as a way to mitigate their impact on the environment. We look forward to bringing Green-e certification to the retail greenhouse gas reduction market in the very near future."

Green-e is the nation's leading renewable electricity certification program, providing independent, third party verification to ensure renewable energy products meet strict environmental and consumer protection standards set through a collaborative process with environmentalists, consumer advocates and energy experts. Providers of Green-e certified renewable energy undergo an annual verification to document that they purchased or generated enough renewable energy in quantity and type to meet customer demand and marketing claims. The 2005 verification results represent renewable energy sales from more than 137 participating vendors and utilities selling 52 Green-e certified products. Of these products, 24 were electricity products offered by utilities and competitive retailers, and 28 were Renewable Energy Certificate products.

Highlights of the verification results from 2005 include:

  • 5.2 million MWh of Green-e certified renewable energy products were sold in 2005 - up 43% from 2004.

  • Sales of Green-e certified renewable energy certificates increased 56% from 2004, representing 3.7 million MWh of renewable generation.

  • Green-e certified more than 50% of the sales in the nationwide voluntary renewable energy market.
