Washington, D.C. - Sept. 11, 2008 - Today, GlobalGiving, the innovative online marketplace for philanthropy, launched the "Safer, More Compassionate World Fund," which is dedicated to fighting the conditions that breed terrorism around the world.

"In the days following 9/11, Americans responded with an outpouring of goodwill toward families who had lost loved ones and we stood together with widespread solidarity against terrorism," said Gene Steuerle, one of the Fund's founders, who lost his wife on September 11th, 2001, when her plane crashed into the Pentagon. "It was this outpouring that motivated our family, along with other 9/11 families, to use the money we received from the 9/11 Compensation Fund to send a message to the world: that peaceful collaboration is one of our best defenses to terrorism over the long term."

Driven by the philosophy of "visionary philanthropy," which believes the best response to tragedy is an outpouring of love and generosity from individuals, Gene, along with friends and families of other 9/11 victims has worked to tear down networks of terror by building networks of good through education, tolerance and social justice in regions vulnerable to terrorism around the world.

To encourage other Americans to mark the 7th anniversary of 9/11 by joining their cause, Gene worked with GlobalGiving.com to launch the Safer, More Compassionate World Fund, through which individuals can contribute in order to support projects making economic, education and other social changes in vulnerable parts of the world such as Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Whether it's fast tracking education for Afghan women and girls, financing microlending in rural Afghanistan, or establishing health clinics in Pakistan, Americans who want to play a role in combating terrorism over the long term can go online and, with as little as $10, help Gene and others make lasting change.

"Investing in the human capabilities of those living in troubled areas of the world is the best long-term strategy for building a safer world for all of us," said Mari Kuraishi, co-founder of GlobalGiving. "The Safer, More Compassionate World Fund, allows everyday Americans to make real and lasting change in the world - it's peer-to-peer democracy at its best!"

Through October 31st, Gene and other "Our Voices Together" founders will match donations from $100 to $10,000 dollars at 50%.

GlobalGiving believes in transparency from start to finish. Once donors give to the Safer, More Compassionate World Fund, or any of the projects that comprise it, they will see the impact of their donation through regular updates from project leaders. Donors can even contact and build relationships with the project leaders directly, deepening the connection between individuals and the communities they are supporting in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
