July 2, 2007- The People's Republic of China Labor Contract Law was ratified on 29th June, after months of controversy and deliberation in draft form. The new law means employers across the China will have to re-evaluate their practices for hiring, making workplace rules, setting probation periods, and many other issues before 1st January, 2008 when the law goes into effect.

Overseas sourcers managing compliance programmes in China will also have to revisit the way evaluations and monitoring are carried out.

The China Center for Labor and Environment was established with the mission of building consensus among the Chinese business community with regards to CSR and sustainability issues.

This work is accomplished by building business-government-non-profit networks, making informational resources available online, interpreting and translating legal issues and documents, consultancy and driving research in the areas of corporate responsibility and sustainability. Local supplier improvement capacity-building programmes are available through a network of local experts and consultants.

With an office in Shenzhen, the China Center for Labor and Environment enables businesses to interact on a platform of legal compliance information guided by government experts and the non-profit sector.

Xing Xinmin was for ten years the Director of Regulation Section of China for the Ministry of Labour. He is the major drafter of China's Labour Law and current labor-related legislation. Yang Zhe was a former official of the China Ministry of Labor and is a specialist in labour dispute arbitration.

Access to the comprehensive legal database, translated from Chinese, is available to subscribers. The www.csrlaws.com online tool features local and special case requirements; case studies; questions and answers; legal interpretation and continuous updates.
