Shell: Meeting the Energy Challenge Sustainably

Royal Dutch Shell has released its tenth report on its environmental and social performance. The Shell Sustainability Report 2006 (available via http://www.reportalert.info/ra/Shell080507.htm) describes the company’s efforts to help meet the global energy challenge: providing more energy to raise living standards; keeping energy supplies secure; and doing both in environmentally and socially responsible ways.

It describes how, through its people, investment and technology, it is:

- finding more oil and natural gas

- providing a diverse range of suppliers of natural gas

- developing substitutes for oil in the transport sector and alternative sources of electricity
- improving the environmental performance of its operations and products.

The report includes an interview with Jeroen van der Veer, Chief Executive, discussing Shell’s business strategy and the role of sustainable development in it; progress on key issues such as climate change; and the company’s progress against the key performance indicators it developed with stakeholders.

For the second year, an independent External Review Committee has reviewed and assessed the report’s balance, completeness and responsiveness, guided by the AA1000 Assurance Standard.

2006 Report Highlights

- Open discussion with Basil Omiyi, Country Chair, Shell in Nigeria, on the challenges of working in Nigeria. In 2006, Shell shut down half its production in the Delta region because of security concerns.

- Progress of the Sakhalin II project in meeting its environmental and social commitments and the entry of Gazprom as the new majority shareholder.

- A stronger and more specific call on governments to take effective action on climate change by setting the regulatory framework needed to encourage massive investments in new energy projects, in cleaner technologies and energy conservation.

- A new, more in depth, description of the company’s approach to public advocacy and human rights.

Hard copies of the report can be ordered from using the company compact available on http://www.reportalert.info/ra/Shell080507.htm
