SPRINGFIELD, MA - February 6, 2007 - Kosmo Solar installed several solar energy systems for low income residents of the Pioneer Valley in 2006. These homeowners will enjoy benefits through these systems including stabilization of electric rates for the next 30 years, the positive feeling associated with making a beneficial impact for the environment, and avoidance of greenhouse gas production associated with global warming. The combined energy output for these systems will be 382MWhrs (megawatt-hrs) over the lifespan of the equipment and save the rate payers over $159,000 all while avoiding 170 tons of carbon dioxide, 1033 lbs of sulfur dioxide, and 629 lbs of nitrous oxides.

In 2006, the average size of solar electric (photovoltaic) systems installed by Kosmo Solar was 3.5 kW (kilowatts), and these systems can generate about 14kWh a day. The average household uses about 21kWh daily. Installed solar domestic hot water systems will save homeowners hundreds of dollars per year in water heating. Solar energy systems help to stabilize energy costs as electric and heating fuel rates continue to climb.

These systems were part of a record-breaking year in which Kosmo Solar installed over 220kW of grid-connected solar electric generation across Massachusetts and Connecticut. These systems will offset more than 4500 tons of CO2 over the life of the solar modules. The company also added five new full time positions to the renewable energy workforce in Springfield and expects to double that number in 2007.
