SAP Reduces Carbon Footprint of Its Palo Alto Campus With Solar-Panel Installation and Commitment to Renewable Energy

PALO ALTO, Calif. - April 20, 2009 - As another step in its goal of reducing its global carbon emissions, SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced it has installed solar panels at its Palo Alto campus as an alternative clean-energy source. Peter Graf, chief sustainability officer and executive vice president of Sustainability Solutions, SAP AG, and Doug Koshima, chairman and CEO of solar-energy leader Sharp Electronics Corporation, unveiled the new solar arrays today as part of SAP Virtualization Week, being held at the SAP Palo Alto campus from April 20-22, 2009.

The solar panel installation is part of efforts by SAP to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to its year-2000 levels by 2020. The 644 solar panels, manufactured by SAP customer Sharp Electronics, are installed on two SAP buildings and are designed to generate 295,077 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of solar-powered electricity annually. SAP expects the system to reduce its carbon emissions by 154 metric tons annually. It will also eliminate the peak-load energy consumption of the company’s regional computing center on the electrical supply grid during daylight hours, providing both environmental and financial benefits.

The clean energy generated by the solar panel installation complements the recent commitment by SAP to purchase energy derived from renewable sources from PaloAltoGreen, the renewable-energy program of the City of Palo Alto Utilities (CPAU). SAP plans to purchase 2,628,000 kWh annually from CPAU-the equivalent of the annual output of one large-scale wind turbine.

The use of renewable energy supports SAP's recently announced aggressive carbon reduction targets see("SAP Increases Focus on Sustainable Business") and its long-term strategic focus on sustainability in both its own operations and through delivering solutions that support its customers' sustainable business practices.
