Lodestar Foundation Announces Final Selection Panel Members for The Collaboration Prize

PHOENIX, AZ. - July 8, 2008 - PHOENIX, Ariz., July 8, 2008 "“ The Lodestar Foundation, an organization dedicated to maximizing the impact of philanthropy by efficiently and effectively leveraging philanthropic resources, today announced the members of the Final Selection Panel for The Collaboration Prize.

This distinguished panel includes nationally recognized philanthropic and nonprofit leaders, accomplished business professionals who also are stewards of exemplary philanthropic endeavors and pioneers in the field of innovative collaboration. Together, they will select The Collaboration Prize winner "“ two or more nonprofits that have united to form a long-term collaborative model demonstrating the most exceptional business efficiencies and community impact over time. The winner will receive a $250,000 prize.

The Collaboration Prize's Final Selection Panel is composed of the following nonprofit leaders and business visionaries:

  • Selection Panel Chairman Sterling Speirn, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation
  • Howard W. Buffett, chair and founder of The Clark and Hinman Foundation
  • Peggy Dulany, founder and chair of The Synergos Institute
  • Pamela Flaherty, president and CEO of the Citi Foundation and chair of the Board of Trustees of Johns Hopkins University
  • Jerry Hirsch, founder and chairman of The Lodestar Foundation
  • Michael A. McRobbie, president of Indiana University
  • Craig Newmark, customer service rep and founder, Craigslist
  • George F. Russell, Jr., chairman emeritus of Russell Investments and founder and chairman of The Russell Family Foundation
  • Craig E. Weatherup, former chairman and CEO of Pepsi-Cola Company and chairman of the Board of Arizona State University Foundation
"We are honored that these prominent and influential leaders believe so much in the benefits of long-term collaboration that they have committed their time and wisdom to The Collaboration Prize," said Jerry Hirsch, The Lodestar Foundation Chairman. "In uniting to advance the fundamental common goal of identifying and celebrating successful models of enduring collaboration, we hope to advance cooperation rather than competition in the nonprofit sector."

Designed to inspire cooperation instead of competition and encourage nonprofits to create efficient business practices, The Prize will be awarded from among eight finalists to one collaboration that demonstrates through quantifiable evidence that it has achieved exceptional impact and significantly eliminated the duplication of efforts through programmatic collaborations, administrative consolidation or other joint activities. The most outstanding models will be compiled for study and used as blueprints by academics, nonprofit leaders and grantmakers in order to uncover new techniques and advance the practice of nonprofit collaboration.

About The Collaboration Prize
The annual Collaboration Prize was created and is funded by The Lodestar Foundation in association with the AIM Alliance. All submissions will be reviewed for eligibility by university faculty associated with the AIM Alliance and La Piana Associates, a leading management and consulting firm dedicated to helping nonprofits and foundations become stronger and more effective through collaboration. The Final Selection Panel will choose eight finalists from a list of up-to 30 semi-finalists, who will all receive formal recognition of their achievements,and then choose a Grand Prize winner from the eight finalists.

The Prize recipient will be announced in March 2009 during the Spring Forum on Nonprofit Effectiveness, held by the Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation at Arizona State University. The $250,000 prize must be used for charitable purposes, such as enhancing the winning collaboration’s continued service to its constituents or clients.

Eligibility and Nomination Details

Eligible collaborations must be among two or more nonprofit organizations that each would otherwise compete for clients, financial resources and staff. The collaboration must have begun at least 18 months prior to nomination and must have been in existence no longer than eight years prior to the date of nomination. In addition, the collaboration model must be designed to be permanent or to last for an indefinite period of time.

Nominations for The Collaboration Prize are currently being accepted until 5 p.m. EDT on July 21, 2008. Nominations may be submitted by an individual who is familiar with the collaboration, but is not an employee of any entities involved in the collaboration. Board members may complete nominations in support of organizations they serve.
