LOS ANGELES, CA - March 26, 2009 - Union Bank, N.A., announced today that it presented the Carson Scholars Fund with a $25,000 award to support the organization's scholarship program. Union Bank president and CEO, Masaaki Tanaka, presented the award check to Benjamin S. Carson, Sr., M.D., on March 11, 2009, at a special symposium honoring him and the TNT original movie, Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story.

A role model to countless individuals of all ages, Dr. Carson, director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, defied the odds and became a world renowned pediatric neurosurgeon. Adding to his long list of accomplishments, in 1987, Dr. Carson made medical history when he participated in the first successful operation separating conjoined twins linked at the back of the head. Today, Dr. Carson operates on more than 300 children every year at Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

In 1994, Dr. Carson and his wife, Candy, founded the Carson Scholars Fund. The fund awards young people of all backgrounds, who show exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishment, with a renewable $1,000 college scholarship. Today, the Carson Scholars Fund awards nearly 600 scholarships annually, and has awarded more than 3,400 scholarships since its inception. In total, Carson scholarship winners have received more than $3.4 million in scholarship funds to help finance their education.

"Union Bank is honored to support higher education through our $25,000 gift to the Carson Scholars Fund," said George Ramirez, senior vice president and head of Priority Banking(R) at Union Bank. "Dr. Carson has made it his lifelong commitment to spread hope by helping people improve their lives through hard work and education. We're glad to be able to support him in this cause," Ramirez said.

Union Bank president and CEO Masaaki Tanaka presented the award check to Dr. Carson at the March 11 Union Bank-sponsored symposium honoring him and the TNT Original movie based on his life story that originally aired in February. The movie stars Oscar(R) winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. and two-time NAACP Image Award winner, Kimberly Elise. The symposium, which took place at Sony Pictures Plaza Atrium in Culver City and was attended by nearly 200 guests, featured special appearances by director Thomas Carter and executive producers Margaret Loesch and Dan Angel.
