STURTEVANT,WI,. - June 18, 2008 - JohnsonDiversey Inc., a leading provider of professional cleaning and hygiene products and systems, helped food and beverage customers in 21 sites around the world save 1.016 billion gallons of water in 2007 through its water management program. The company's water-saving efforts are detailed in its new Global Responsibility Report for 2007, which is available at www.johnsondiversey.com.

"We're excited to see how our long-term commitment to sustainability is also helping our customers improve their sustainability profile," said JohnsonDiversey Chairman S. Curtis Johnson. "Our products are protecting lives by making food and facilities safer, preserving the environment by reducing use of water, energy and packaging and helping our customers enhance their profitability by reducing their costs."

Savings for bottlers

The JohnsonDiversey report details its sustainability performance in 2007, including water management consulting and systems that beverage makers used to dramatically reduce water use while also improving overall resource and operational efficiency.

A key element of the company's water-saving program is Aquacheck(TM), a proprietary three-step audit and consulting service that uses a total-site approach to water use and production efficiency. The program measures and analyzes water use patterns and recommends efficiency improvements.

In one case, JohnsonDiversey assisted a plant in a water shortage area in the U.S. to reduce its water use by 30 percent. The plant went from using approximately 2.5 gallons of water to produce one gallon of beverage to using 1.7 gallons of water per gallon of beverage.

Commitment to food safety and public health

In addition to its water-saving efforts, JohnsonDiversey continued to be a resource to customers in protecting the world's food supply and combating infectious diseases.

"Well-publicized public health and food safety incidents raised industry and public awareness of the importance of high-performance cleaning and hygiene across all facilities," said JohnsonDiversey President and CEO Ed Lonergan. "Our response to threats to public health demonstrated our ability to partner with our customers to protect the safety of food and facilities."

For example, the company quickly responded to the outbreaks of community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, in schools in the United States. In record time, JohnsonDiversey ramped up production and distribution of its patented accelerated hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant, which kills MRSA bacteria up to 10 times faster than typical disinfectants.

Additional achievements

Among the additional achievements highlighted in the 2007 Global Responsibility Report:

  • JohnsonDiversey's agribusiness team in Turkey launched the "Save the Milk" project with officials from Turkey's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the United Kingdom's International Agriculture Technologies Center. The program is designed to improve the quality of raw milk produced in the southeast rural areas of Turkey through training and product use.
  • The company trained food suppliers in China, Vietnam and Latin America using its comprehensive food safety program, SafeKey, which helps standardize food processing and manufacturing practices.
  • The company reduced workplace safety incidents in 2007 by 10.2 percent over the previous year.
  • In 30 countries, employees donated thousands of hours through the company’s Global Children's Initiative. The GCI matches local company operations with needy schools and focuses on improving school facilities, teaching children about the importance of personal hygiene and hand washing and mentoring students.
  • In Europe, JohnsonDiversey introduced its Pur-Eco(TM) line of environmentally responsible cleaning products, certified by either or both of the continent's independent green-cleaning certification bodies, Nordic Swan and EU Flower.
